Project FarmElder

Social Farming for the Elderly

Web page: farmelder.eu

FarmElder is a European initiative created to address the complex and growing challenges associated with the continent’s ageing population. By 2050, nearly 30% of the European Union’s population will be over the age of 65, exacerbating existing problems such as social isolation, mental health issues, and a lack of adequate care services. FarmElder addresses these challenges through the innovative concept of social farming, which integrates agricultural activities with social services to provide a therapeutic and inclusive environment for older people.

Social farming offers an opportunity to improve the quality of life for older adults by fostering social connections, improving mental and physical health, and promoting a sense of purpose. The FarmElder project aims to increase the availability of social farming opportunities across Europe by training farmers on how to work with elderly people. By working with educational institutions, farmers, and policymakers, the project is laying the foundations for a more inclusive approach to elderly care, especially in rural and remote areas.

Expected impact

FarmElder will have a significant impact on the farming community, in particular by improving the viability of marginal farms through social farming. It also aims to influence service providers and policymakers by highlighting the therapeutic potential of social farming for older people.

As we enter the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, FarmElder will draw attention to the needs of older adults, ensuring they are considered in future policy planning, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and supportive society.
