Project SOILGUARD

Sustainable soil management to unleash soil biodiversity potential and increase environmental, economic and social wellbeing

Web page: soilguard-h2020.eu

SOILGUARD addresses the pressing challenges of soil degradation and biodiversity loss, exacerbated by unsustainable management practices and climate change. Soil biodiversity underpins essential ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, carbon storage and plant health, all of which are critical for resilient agricultural and natural systems. However, these hidden ecosystems are often undervalued, leading to practices that compromise soil health and long-term sustainability.

Recognising soil biodiversity as a cornerstone for ecosystem recovery and climate resilience, this initiative aims to provide tools, knowledge and strategies to enable policy makers, land managers and communities to make informed, sustainable decisions for the future of Europe’s soils.

Our role in the project

Graphic design

Project objectives

1

Develop a conceptual and analytical framework for assessing soil biodiversity and its contributions.

2

Validate the framework through innovative experimental designs across different biomes and degradation gradients.

3

Create the SOILGUARDIANS prediction tool to support stakeholders in sustainable soil management.

4

Establish the SOILGUARD Knowledge Network to promote innovation and exchange of experience.

5

Provide evidence-based conservation recommendations for EU and international policy.

Main results

Framework development

A global standard for future assessments of soil biodiversity and its contribution to multifunctionality and human well-being

SOILGUARDIANS tool

A predictive application linking soil biodiversity, multifunctionality, and well-being to support stakeholders in sustainable practices

Knowledge Network

An ecosystem for users to showcase, learn, and share experiences in soil biodiversity conservation

Policy recommendations

Evidence-based guidelines to inform EU and international soil conservation policies

Expected impact

SOILGUARD aims to improve environmental sustainability by promoting practices that conserve soil biodiversity, leading to healthier ecosystems. Economically, it seeks to improve agricultural productivity and resilience by maintaining soil health. Socially, the project aspires to increase awareness and commitment to soil conservation, fostering a community committed to sustainable land management.
