The CIRCU-TECH project aims to support the transition of the European aquaculture sector towards a circular and sustainable model. This initiative responds to pressing environmental, economic and social challenges, in particular those related to inadequate waste management practices. These challenges include compliance with strict EU regulations, the risk of environmental contamination due to improper waste disposal, the limited uptake of cost-effective waste management strategies, and societal concerns about sustainability and food safety that hinder the social acceptance of aquaculture practices.
By integrating advanced digital tools such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), the project will equip aquaculture workers with innovative training solutions that promote eco-design principles, resource efficiency and sustainability. It addresses the growing need for circular practices, in line with the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Green Deal.
In addition, CIRCU-TECH has wider benefits beyond environmental improvements. It aims to strengthen the economic resilience of aquaculture businesses by promoting cost-effective waste recycling strategies, fostering societal acceptance and supporting compliance with EU regulations. Ultimately, the project seeks to transform aquaculture into a model of circularity and sustainability, ensuring long-term economic and social viability while reducing its environmental footprint.
