Project CIRCU-TECH

Circular Competence Training for Aquaculture Waste Management using VR and AR Tools

Web page: Available soon

The CIRCU-TECH project aims to support the transition of the European aquaculture sector towards a circular and sustainable model. This initiative responds to pressing environmental, economic and social challenges, in particular those related to inadequate waste management practices. These challenges include compliance with strict EU regulations, the risk of environmental contamination due to improper waste disposal, the limited uptake of cost-effective waste management strategies, and societal concerns about sustainability and food safety that hinder the social acceptance of aquaculture practices.

By integrating advanced digital tools such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), the project will equip aquaculture workers with innovative training solutions that promote eco-design principles, resource efficiency and sustainability. It addresses the growing need for circular practices, in line with the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Green Deal.

In addition, CIRCU-TECH has wider benefits beyond environmental improvements. It aims to strengthen the economic resilience of aquaculture businesses by promoting cost-effective waste recycling strategies, fostering societal acceptance and supporting compliance with EU regulations. Ultimately, the project seeks to transform aquaculture into a model of circularity and sustainability, ensuring long-term economic and social viability while reducing its environmental footprint.

Project objectives

1

Improve the environmental impact of aquaculture by adopting circular and sustainable models of waste management.

2

Implement more sustainable and climate-resilient waste management solutions tailored to the aquaculture industry.

3

Increase the flexibility of vocational training opportunities by integrating traditional methods with advanced digital learning tools such as virtual simulations.

4

Develop a comprehensive vocational training programme to meet the evolving needs of the aquaculture industry, focusing on circular economy, sustainability and digital literacy.

Main results

Circularity indicators and metrics

Tools will be developed to monitor and assess the sustainability and circularity of aquaculture operations, tailored to different production intensities and techniques in both inland and marine environments.

Training handbook

A comprehensive guide to key concepts, best practices, lessons learned and additional resources to support aquaculture workers in implementing circular economy and sustainable waste management practices.

E-learning platform

A platform hosting training modules and digital tools designed to provide aquaculture workers with accessible, flexible and self-paced learning opportunities on circular and sustainable practices.

Awareness campaign

A targeted campaign will be implemented to increase public understanding and social acceptance of sustainable aquaculture practices, highlighting their environmental, economic and societal benefits.

Expected impact

CIRCU-TECH will bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to the aquaculture sector. By implementing innovative waste management strategies, the project will contribute to reducing environmental impacts, promoting economic viability and building societal acceptance of sustainable aquaculture practices. This initiative will empower communities, improve industry standards and contribute to EU sustainability goals, paving the way for a greener future.
The expected impact of CIRCU-TECH is planned at three levels:

  • At the local level, it promotes better waste management practices in aquaculture and strengthens local networks to support sustainability.
  • At the national level, the project will contribute to improving the skills of aquaculture workers and promoting the adoption of circular and eco-design practices.
  • At the European level, CIRCU-TECH contributes to the facilitation of the transition to a circular economy model, supporting policy development and improving the public image of the industry.
