Project EX-AQUA

EXcellence and competitiveness in marine algae AQUAculture for a sustainable Black Sea

Web page: ex-aqua.eu

Algae aquaculture offers a sustainable alternative for the production of high quality, healthy, and diverse marine products while contributing to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. However, in Romania, marine algae aquaculture (M.A.A.) remains significantly underdeveloped and faces challenges in achieving its goals, despite its great potential to promote sustainable development, particularly in the Black Sea region.

EX-AQUA is designed to address these challenges by empowering the National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” (NIMRD) to achieve excellence in M.A.A. and act as a catalyst for innovation and competitiveness in the Black Sea region. The project aims to develop the local value chain, unlock applications for living marine resources, create jobs and generate market opportunities. By transferring expertise from leading Western institutions and engaging public and private organisations, EX-AQUA will tailor solutions to the specific environment of the Black Sea. This approach will ultimately support the creation of new industries and strengthen the Blue Economy value chain in the region.

Project objectives

1

Creating Excellence Science in marine algae aquaculture

2

Increasing Capacity Building for NIMRD to increase their impact in Research, Development, and Innovation

3

Strengthening the local Innovation ecosystem for the industrial uptake of new technological solutions for marine algae aquaculture

4

Creating Synergies through the creation of a Cluster for Marine Applied Aquaculture

Expected impact

EX-AQUA will put the south-eastern region of the EU on the map of marine and algae aquaculture and reduce the disparities between EU regions. By promoting sustainable practices, the project will contribute to the objectives of the European Green Deal, promoting environmental sustainability, economic growth and social well-being in the Black Sea region.
